an old friend and ex-coworker sari from the infamous martini bar of prague in the early 90's has come up with this great idea of how mask a solar charger in an old book->

Background:

Needed a hinged case to house the components - wanted to add warmth to the cold components, something which naturally would not short out the circuit or heat up easily and be a simple form factor (the original project suggests an altoid tin).

Technique inspired by the Burroughs and Gysin cut up method, aesthetic derived from A Humument by Tom Phillips (an artist book created from a Victorian novel).

This project was a true lesson in materials... slow going and things broke and needed to be repaired. Humbling. And I have yet to understand it from an energy perspective."

the buckminster fuller challenge has a really interesting submission. i wouldn't have thought about this, being a rich american, but people living in the slum's have terrible access to toilet's. "650 people share each toilet cubicle" is just a loosing proposition. i mean thinking of it logically- 650 people- one toilet. you'd have to take a shit, then get back into line for the next day. that's not right.
hopefully bucky's ghost will save the day, proving once again that the circle has much more power than the square.

and what a summer it was! so many trips into the woods, so many beautiful night's, sunny day's...but now it is actually fall and it's time to let time catch me again. summer's like that make me want to become completely nomadic and just move south to catch the warm air. in a better economy i might... but for now-> time slows down again.

i've been meaning to get this blog out of the way for a while, but i've never done a recipe blog before. actually, i think i'll try and approach this as a process instead of a recipe.
for some reason a few months ago i decided to learn how to make bread. i'm not much of a cook still to this day. even after figuring out how to bake bread i still need some guidance on cooking in general. i still make the same old recipes until i get sick of them and then switch to a new food.
the thing about learning to bake bread is that once you get the master recipe down there are loads of variations you can make with that basic knowledge. like i said i am not a cook, so when i went looking for a recipe, i looked for the simplest possible one. a little googling brought up a recipe by Zoe Francois and Jeff Hertzberg in a book called "Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking".
talk about simple! what a find. i would suggest checking out their website and book. they made it possible for me to make really good bread and basically made bread making a part of my routine.
simple;
take 3 cups of water, 1 1/2 tablespoons yeast, 1 1/2 tablespoons salt and 6 1/2 cups "all purpose, unbleached flour" and mix them together in a plastic bucket with a lid.
you mix the ingredients together with a wooden spoon until the flour is mixed in and there are no chunks of flour in the mixture. then you put the lid on the bucket (not an airtight seal) and put it in a dark warm place for 2-3 hours.
after this you can make bread, or put the dough in the fridge for up to 2 weeks to make later.
the next step in the process-> actually baking the bread. what you will need is some cornmeal, a pizza pan, and some extra flour to keep the dough from sticking all over everything.
spread some flour on your counter top and on your hands, open the bucket and grab a big handful of dough (this is all on the attached linked video), shape the dough into a ball and then while holding the ball on both sides, push the dough from the sides into the bottom, until you have a well shaped oval piece of dough.
place the oval peice of dough on your pizza pan covered in cornmeal (the corn meal keeps the dough from sticking to the pan) and let it sit for 40 minutes.
after this preheat the oven to 450 and bake the dough for 45 minutes.
done.

years ago i bought a book about the situationist international. took it home and tied to read it. i liked the art. i think it was a lot of cut-ups and bold graphic art, almost like a comic book that made little sense to me at the time. it's been years, so i dont remember what book it was, but tonight i stumbled across an old sensationalist movie and it hit home a bit.
the idea of life as a spectacle, where we are not only the viewer's of the propaganda, but the creator's. we are the propoganda. where we are on one side, left or right, but those sides have the same end point. we think we are fighting against, but we are just part of the game. we are all dress as individuals, yet we all shop at the same store. nice shoe's punk!
the spectacle has been in full view in the past few weeks. everything that happens seems to be a metaphor related to the human experience and how, if given the chance, everyone can become somebody. we are all strong. we can all pull though? blah!
the ugly duckling who can sing like an angel from above(that could be you someday)- the brave captain, who the country needed in these terrible times to remind us of how important we are and how a simple man can make such a difference...and who could forget the tea party people, who all individually decided, without any provocation (we're mad as hell and we're not gonna take it?) whatsoever, to get down to town hall because "government is completely out of hand" all of the sudden.

twitter is the new c.i.a/l.s.d/media/propaganda so saith austin cucher- but the new generation needs to share his/her every move and thought in order to be happy.
we've gone from minding our own business, to needing everyone we know (including those we don't, i'm sure) to know everything about us.

"Expedition Truck RV 6x6 - $19000 (Central Arizona)

This is a 1967 US Military Kaiser M35A2 “Deuce and a half” with about 40,000 miles on the base truck and only 10,000 miles on the new engine, transmission & tires. The truck is registered as a 1967 Kaiser and does not require a CDL to operate on US or Canadian highways.

We (my wife Cathy & I) wanted a vehicle that could take us into the boonies for a month at a time and get us back out again. This truck has met the challenge in spades! However, we did make a few modifications.

The original loud smelly diesel engine got 8-9 mpg at 54 mph max. speed, not good enough. We replaced the diesel with a new gas 8.1L (496 cid) fuel injected computer controlled Chevy Vortec engine and a ZF manual 6 sp with overdrive purchased from Engines Direct in Phoenix Az. Mandrel bent exhaust headers were added as well as a heavy duty 3 row radiator with dual electric cooling fans. A K&N air filter with custom air intake keeps the engine breathing clean. The gas engine actually improves the off road ‘crawl ability’ since it produces the same torque as the diesel but twice the horsepower at lower RPMs!
Programming for the engine computer was done by Leland Wester at Westers Garage in Alberta Canada. Leland is a great guy & knows his stuff. I don’t have enough space to get into the problems I had with my original vendor, Fuel Injection Specialties of San Antonio, but Leland bailed me out. We now average 9.5 mpg with less expensive fuel and cruise at 65 mph with the engine turning a relaxing 2200 rpm. At those sustained speeds the old military tires would shred so we had 22.5” wheels made in order to run standard tubeless heavy truck tires. Fixing a flat is no longer an ordeal - I broke down those old 200 pound split rim wheels and patched the old tube type tires 14 times in one year! I’m too old for that crap!

I removed the troublesome Sprague gears from the transfer case and replaced them with a manual lockup gear set I got from Memphis Equipment. While I was at it I installed locking hubs on the front axles and an air assist to the manual steering. 120 psi compressed air is provided by a continuous duty 12v compressor controlled by an adjustable pressure switch. The compressed air is stored in two decent sized tanks. A manual override switch is available to fill the tires if necessary or if higher psi is needed.

The cab was raised 6” and moved forward 20” to provide space for the storage area seen between the cab and the habitat. While we were at it we tilted the bottom of the windshield out to provide the interior space for a dash - I think it also added a bit of style too (forget aerodynamics). The seats are an aftermarket off road style mounted to stock suspension bases. Between the seats is an electric cooler. We use a laptop wired to a GPS receiver to get us un-lost. The cab is now quiet enough to enjoy the Cambridge Labs sound system. - oohrah! On top of the cab sit’s a 500,000 candle power fully articulating remote control spot light - handy.

We added a second 50 gallon saddle fuel tank giving us a total of 100 gallons. That is over 900 miles of driving between gas stations - handy in the boonies.

I fabricated a stainless steel water tank which is located between the frame rails and holds about 100 gallons. We also have several filters and an ozone system. We can circulate the water thru the filters/ozone to keep the tank clean.

The rear deck can be lowered by an electric winch to off load the Yamaha XT600 motorcycle. The bike was an idea that wasn’t all that great. We thought we might want to use it to run to a store or check out a questionable road - we didn’t. Sold the bike in the Carolinas.

There are three cross frame storage boxes that drop down from under the bed. They are mostly filled with canned goods and a couple dozen bottles of wine - there should be at least some modicum of civility in the wilderness!

The habitat is is similar to the Alaskan Campers. The outer lid is raised 3’ by 4) 2.5” dia. hydraulic cylinders with 1.125” dia. chrome steel rods using air pressure to provide for 6’6” standing headroom in the camper. The shell of the habitat is a welded steel frame with inset panels made from laminated aluminum sheet, EPS foam, and ¼” Luan plywood bolted into the frame. The camper has a queen bed that can be tilted up to access storage underneath. There are two 3.5 cubic foot refrigerators, stereo, 26” LCD TV, DVD player, two burner propane stove, toilet, shower, love seat, and plenty of storage for food and clothing. The flooring is Pergo on top of ¾ ply on top of 1” EPS foam on top of the steel truck bed. All the cabinets are screwed and glued to take the abuse of off road travel. The exposed portions of the cabinetry is made of varnished tongue and groove knotty Pine.

Fully loaded and with full bellies the truck tips the scales at a reasonable 17,000 lbs. giving us an extra 7,000 lbs. before we reach the conservative max. rated GVW - hmm, more wine storage?

We are selling the truck to help finance our next adventure - that big hole in the water into which you pour lots of money!"

i wish someone would follow up on this design, but until then..actually the bathroom at the house i live at right now has a beautiful bathtub with jacuzzi jets in it, so im not complaining, but bucky was so far ahead in thought. this dymaxion bathroom could change the world- and it breaks down into "four, stamped sheet metal or molded plastic sections are each light enough to be carried by two workers. They'll fit up tight staircases and through narrow doors, allowing retrofitting in existing structures. All the appliances, pipes, and wires are built-in, limiting on-site construction to mere hook-up."

there is an electric composting toilet on the market, but its extremely expensive. i cant remember the name of it, but bucky fuller was thinking about this kind of thing in the thirties.

i first saw this in national geographic. our first piece of currency was a piece of poetic art. the words "mind your business" and "fugio" (which means time fly's in latin) written across the front wreak of individualism and life. unlike the new dollar, with the all seeing eye watching your every move (doesn't the symbolism on the one dollar bill seem sinister to you?)...if at all possible, i think we should revert to those values. get rid of "in dog we trust". it means nothingness. those words have gotten us nowhere.

a couple years back i tried to find the people i was in the army with 20 years ago. it was definitely a lost cause, i think mostly because during the first iraq war many of my friends lost it. war does that to a lot of people. the death toll that the government releases does nothing to represent the destruction war releases on the military families/veterans. so, i signed up for military.com seeking old friends and this week i received this informing me that brain injuries in iraq war veterans could number 360,00 soldiers.

i found this article this morning after my friend and i were talking about him building a camper for his truck himself because he didn't like what he saw on the market. i like this camper design because while i don't think you could stand in it, i'm sure you could sit down. the other plus would be you could set the inside up the way you want. a good launchpad for idea's for a homemade camper.

wow...it's near mid february and the doom and gloom in portland is staggering. i drive cab. have for close to 15 years off and on(in 3 different cities) and i've never seen anything like this. the streets are empty, with bored cabdrivers just sitting- waiting. the economy is still spiraling like a crashing plane(everyday seems worse.). i know we are gonna crash into the hudson, but i need to put on one of those oxygen masks the flight attendant told us about while i was reading one of those strange airplane catalogs (who buys those chocolate waterfall things anyways?)
im just grasping for a handle to the life raft lately. it's all so surreal how fast things are falling apart, and thinking about it is terribly worrysome/depressing, so i've resigned myself to looking forward, and use all my spare time to create my future.for the most part i look at my life as art (see dada) and always had dreams half finished, but now in a panic i plan to manifest them.
my dream- to be completely mobile and this crisis has almost forced me to realization.
i've always lived my life with the bare minimum "stuff", minimal enough so that i can pick up and move at any moment. but when i move, i usually take an airplane and mail my crap to myself, or ask a friend to do it for me, so when i arrive and i'm settled in, they can send me my crap(i have the best of friends).
this time is different. this time i don't want to move. i love oregon. but i want to have a back-up plan. roof over my head if something drastic happens.
i was going to buy a bus and renovate it, and i have a lot of friends that either have lived in a bus or are living in one right now, but i live in the city and have no place to park one. they are also really conspicuous. i lived in an old van a few years ago and even that was hard to keep undercover. so...i decided to buy a diesel pick-up(for conversion to vegi oil, WVO) and to buy a vintage travel trailer. there are plenty of campgrounds, national forest and BLM in oregon to escape to. in fact- i even met a lady in my cab once who had lived out of her car up in gifford pinchot at a campsite and still worked a day job in portland. she said it was hard, but she survived, and i'm sure it made her a stronger person in the end.
i'm selling some of my "stuff" right now and should have the cash soon, so when i find that perfect trailer from the 60's/70's i can go get it and feel confident that if i have to go, i can go, and when i get "there" i won't be sleeping in a flophouse or on the street. i've done both and i'm done with that. in the coming months i will try and update on the progress of my realization and the info i find that lead me to my conclusion. hope to see you when you get there. ill be waiting by the fire.

when im out in the woods for extended periods of time (more than a couple of days), i start to think about taking a hot bath. i plan on building a mobile wood heated tub this spring to put in the back of my pick-up, so i can ruff it and take a hot bath under the stars...looks like this guy (link below) is ahead of me on the homemade wood heated tub, but it doesn't look too portable.
good to keep the ideas moving.

as of late i've been buying canned foods as i watch the economy spirals downward. i really didnt buy into the whole y2k thing, so i missed that whole mess, but even if everything works out for the best, ive found that preparing for bad times is an interesting hobby. my mom came from a different generation/time and always has an abundance of food in the basement, so i think i will follow her lead. not a bad idea, when i live next to a bunch of active volcanoes (the cascades) and on top of land that is long due for an earthquake.
ive collected enough food for maybe 3 weeks, most of the staples like vegi's and fruit..some fish. meat in a can is pretty hard to come by. see spam.
i did find one of my favorite sandwich speads in a can.

the modern hobo camp

last summer i spent a lot of time in the woods here in oregon, checking out a couple of different national forests, camping and exploring the terrain. it's really crazy what oregon and washington have to offer. there are so many hidden jewel's, so many endless logging roads, so much quiet. almost too much quiet.
at time's when i went i my own, without a friend to turn to, to converse with and, in the end watch your back, i felt an actual "fear" of something so big and open. until you get there and start thinking the way i do, you think of the forest as big, open and "empty", or at least that's the way i think of it... until the quiet, comes. because the forest is not empty. it makes me feel really small and week. even when i'm carrying my pistol, i can imagine this big ol cat, slowly pawing through the forest, not making a sound but the sound of it's fur rubbing against the tree's behind me, and then...
well then i try to think of something else but mountain cats.
i have the same affinity to the ocean. i used to have this fantasy of the surfer. the guy on the beach with shorts, smoking ganja and catching a beautiful wave, until i caught one of those waves and it tore me around like a rag doll, shot me up back to the surface and washed me onto shore. I had no idea what kind of power the ocean had and to be honest, i don't think the ocean wanted me in it. it probably doesn't want anyone in it (ie enormous boats that end up sinking)..needless to say i no longer surf and don't even swim in the ocean, because of the underwater mountain cats.
oops, sorry...i was sort of getting off the subject. on to the modern hobo, or as i call um- people who live in the woods.
i was down south of roseburg driving on I-5 south and my truck kept chugging(fuel delivery problem) up those big long mountains so i got a bit worried and pulled off the highway into a little logging town. i was on my way to the grants pass, but it was about an hour from sundown and i had to get into the forest and get my camp set-up. at the truck stop, the teenage girl at the fast food restaurant told me of a place i could camp for free up the road, past town, along a river.
it was a great spot. blm, but all setup with a local dug fire pit on top of a hill overlooking a river, right off the road. it even had an out house-> heaven, i think they call it.
got a fire goin set up camp and enjoyed/
the next morning i woke up to the sound of a chainsaw. not the worst thing i don't think. just reminding me abruptly that was in the woods. got up. made breakfast and chopped some wood for the fire. about an hour into that this old guy appeared at the bottom of the hill. after tieing up his dog he came up the hill waving to talk..."didn't want to startle ya, so waited until u were awake for a bit to come up". very nice guy that looked exactly as you would imagine a logger to be. big beard, red suspenders, flanel shirt.
we talked for a while about mountain lions. i guess there are a couple on each mountain. they have their territory and mostly stay to themselves. sometimes they mess with the logger's because the logger's are destroying the mountain they live on. or there was an incident last summer where one chased a couple high school girls. he didn't say if there were any injuries. i think he was just jabbing me, being the "city folk" i am. i deserved it.
we got to talking about where he was from and he was from the little logging town near the truck stop. i guess he is one of many who worked for the logging company during the time it took to cut down all the tree's on the mountain down the road, and before that a mountain a bit further down the road. they were now squatting the forest outside the town. i think he was in his late 50's maybe early sixties and his home was right down trail along the river. he said he had a truck, but it needed fixing and he also had a travel trailer a bit further into the woods. i have no idea how he got it all back there. i think he was trying to sell something to get the truck on a quick fix. i cant remember what was wrong with it or what he had to sell (my memory is shit) , but it sounded like he was quite happy to be stuck out there. he didn't seem like he was in a hurry to get anywhere really.
as i knew and he explained to me-we as American citizens actually have the right to live on blm land for up to 45 days, so these guys have mobile living vehicles, travel trailers, tents and RVs and they move every 45 days. they are near the town i guess. probably have some sort of hustle to get things done. i wonder if they can collect social security checks out there. without address.
he even told me of an incident where a woman had been forcibly removed from blm land and"she won a million bucks off the government in a lawsuit, because this is our land. they have no right"
it was a strange weekend out there. even met this sort of drunk tweeker and his girlfreind who were panning for gold. he was an ex-con who said he had a blackpowder pistol in his truck. said he could mail order them. it was the harley davidson commemerative black powder pistol. im not sure how much gold he was finding in that river, but those black powder pistols are a bitch to load in a hurry. of all the places and all the occupations. only people with mullets. he was an interesting chap. needless to say after meeting all these people in the forest, i felt even less safe. a good time to practice drawing my pistol. this year i have a better truck and i will get to grants pass and further into the woods.

the article at the link is about this group of people, who it would seem are starting "homeless camps in the national forest. this is all starting to remind me of the romantic time of hobo's, cheats and thieve's in jack black's book "you can't win". we are looking at some ruff times ahead and i think these sorts will end up surviving it, because they are already there

thoughts on a mobile autonomous community

i've always always had this dream of getting land and putting a bunch of trailer's, school bus's, and sustainable/experimental housing and inviting freinds. but, as the article below shows, even when such things are done with the best intentions, there is no way to escape forces that will bring down a dream. sonoma grove had the idea right- buy a plot of land near a university (universities are a great location, becuase they usaully have a self-contained economy, plenty to read and plenty of people to advocate for said dream), plant a bunch of trees and call it home.
not sure this is how i would do it, but i give them the big 23 for trying.
anyone heard of this place? been there? know what happened since?
